The Connection Engine
Use AI well. Stay human.
Build what matters.

Slop.

That's the first word out of most people's mouths when I tell them an AI can be taught to write in their voice.

The worry isn't that it won't work. It's that it will, but everything will end up sounding like everyone else: same cadence, same em-dashes, same inauthentic warmth.

When you've spent years building real expertise, that's not a small concern. Your voice is how people recognize you.

🎧 Doing a voice skill right

We've moved from an AI era focused on prompt engineering to one based on context engineering.

Step one is accessing your voice through recordings, emails, and blog posts. That's where your voice actually lives. The AI drafts that into a reusable context document, and we continually edit it.

🗣️ What comes out of it

The voice skill is a structured document that encodes how one specific person writes: their vocabulary, banned phrases, the essence of their style. The AI reads this document as input before drafting a single word.

For example, here are two outputs from the same brief.

Before, from a capable general-purpose AI:

"In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, building authentic connection with your audience has never been more important."

After, with a customized AI voice skill loaded:

"Most people worry AI will flatten them into everyone else. That's not a tools problem. That's a direction problem."

Both are grammatically correct. Only one belongs to a particular somebody.

🚫 No slop. Ever.

A voice skill is an instrument. A good one. But it still doesn't know when a piece is technically correct and strategically wrong, when a metaphor is one beat too clever, or when the third paragraph should actually be the opening.

That's my job as a creative director. I don't mind saying that I've got four decades of pattern recognition that can't be prompted into existence. Neither can yours.

There's still no replacement for human judgment.

The AI captures how you sound, but the human in the loop decides whether it's worth sending.

Questions worth asking

What's the piece of your communication work that only sounds right when you write it yourself? Might you benefit from not having to recreate that every time you want to publish something?

For my clients and me, that's the exact thing worth building an AI skill for, and the exact thing that needs a creative human watching over it.

If you have wisdom worth sharing, a strong interest in having that expertise amplified, but no interest in becoming a full-time marketer, I'd love to talk. Book a free chat.

Until next week, stay curious,
